South Carolina (SC) has responded to the increased cost of building by pledging to provide additional funds for a hotel to be built in the city. Large companies indicated they will not hold conferences in SC because of the lack of an up-scale convention center. When Bo Aughtry told the city council he could build a hotel with city subsidy, the city responded by promising $1.5 million to upgrade the hotel from a Garden Inn to a full Hilton. The building of the new hotel helped the new Columbia Metropolitan Convention center to be successful. (Knight Ridder Tribune Business News, 2005, Page 1).
