Human Rights in Maldives |
Overview of Human Rights in Maldives

In the past few years, the human rights record in the Republic of Maldives has improved, but serious abuses remain. Presidential power includes the appointment of members of Parliament. This power works to constrain citizens’ ability to effectively or peaceably change their government. The government also restricts freedom of speech, press, assembly, and association. Any religion other than Islam is also prohibited by law. Workers rights are also restricted. That said, Maldives has made some steps toward improving its human rights record. Political parties are now recognized. This allows party leaders to hold public meetings without fear of being arrested or harassed by the government. Prison conditions are improving and detainees’ families are now informed of arrests and detention.

Note: Human Development Index (HDI) is a composite index that measures the level of well-being of nations in the world. It uses factors such as poverty, literacy, life-expectancy, education, gross domestic product, and purchasing power parity to assess the average achievements in each nation. It has been used in the United Nation’s Human Development Report since 1993.
