Human Rights in Mali |
Overview of Human Rights in Mali

Mali is a constitutional democracy. Economically, it is one of the poorest countries in the world. This combined with limited infrastructure, administrative inefficiency, and corruption, has resulted in a somewhat compromised human rights record. Prison conditions are poor. The security forces arbitrarily arrest and detain persons. The judicial system is considered inefficient and a large case backlog results in lengthy pretrial detentions and prolonged trial delays. It is also subject to external influence, especially the executive branch. Trafficking in children, especially to Cote d’Ivoire, and forced child labor continue to be issues of concern.
Human Development Index (HDI) Rank:
175th out of 177
Note: Human Development Index (HDI) is a composite index that measures the level of well-being of nations in the world. It uses factors such as poverty, literacy, life-expectancy, education, gross domestic product, and purchasing power parity to assess the average achievements in each nation. It has been used in the United Nation’s Human Development Report since 1993.
