Overview of Human Rights in Seychelles

The human rights situation in Seychelles is fair. The Seychelles People’s Progressive Front (SPPF) dominates the political spectrum through political patronage and control over government jobs and resources. Reflecting this scenario, the government is corrupt and wields virtually unchecked power. The government also controls the press, influences the judiciary, and restricts labor rights arbitrarily. Security forces are also controlled by the government and act as its agents when called upon. Arbitrary arrest and detention occurs frequently, especially to opponents of the regime in power. Child abuse is also a growing concern.
Human Development Index (HDI) Rank:
47th out of 177
Note: Human Development Index (HDI) is a composite index that measures the level of well-being of nations in the world. It uses factors such as poverty, literacy, life-expectancy, education, gross domestic product, and purchasing power parity to assess the average achievements in each nation. It has been used in the United Nation’s Human Development Report since 1993.
