Overview of Human Rights in Slovenia

slovenia

The Republic of Slovenia is a parliamentary democracy and constitutional republic.  Recent national elections have been considered free and fair by international standards. The government works to respect the civil and human rights of its citizens; however, there are a few areas where problems have been reported. Police and security forces use excessive force against suspects and detainees. Lengthy pretrial delays, due to a slow judiciary system, are problems as well. The government is known to influence media reports; self-censorship is practiced by many journalists. Governmental and societal discrimination against Roma (Gypsies), homosexuals, and former Yugoslav residents without legal status continues unchecked.  Overall, Slovenia has a better than average human rights record when compared with other countries across the globe.

Human Development Index (HDI) Rank:

27th out of 177

Note: Human Development Index (HDI) is a composite index that measures the level of well-being of nations in the world. It uses factors such as poverty, literacy, life-expectancy, education, gross domestic product, and purchasing power parity to assess the average achievements in each nation. It has been used in the United Nation’s Human Development Report since 1993.
