Kunanbaev is among central Asia's most famous literary figures and has been called the father of modern Kazakh literature. Though also an orator, philosopher, and musician, Kunanbaev is best known for his poetry, which praises Kazakh culture. He translated the works of Russian and European authors into Kazakh and transcribed traditional Kazakh poems.
