The first instrument that al-Kabli learned to play was the penny whistle, but it is the oud (a stringed instrument similar to a lute) that he is famous for playing. He is known both for setting traditional folklore and poetry to music as well as writing and composing his own songs about everything from love to social issues. He is admired for his blend of Arabic music styles with a diverse number of African rhythms.
