At the Olympic Games in 1960, Abebe Bikila set a new world record for the marathon and won the race barefoot. Four years later, he set yet a new record, winning the gold medal a second time. Bikila was one of the most famous athletes of the past century and was the first in a progression of world-champion Ethiopian runners.
