Williams was born in Georgetown. Educated as an agronomist, he was sent to work in a remote area among the indigenous Warrau Indians for two years before leaving British Guiana for England in 1952. His experience with the Warrau was to have a major influence on his work, and his abstract paintings reflect motifs of Guyana’s indigenous cultures.
