Baaba Maal was born into the fishermen caste, and his parents insisted that he become a lawyer. So it is perhaps surprising that he instead became a singing superstar in his native Senegal, and that his songs became one of his country’s best-known exports. He was involved in several music groups before embarking on a solo career, during which he has released many albums.
