Bai Bureh |
Passion or Profession: Leader
Period: 1840–1908
Bai Bureh ruled a small kingdom in Sierra Leone during the time of British colonialism. He was stubborn and refused to recognize a treaty that was negotiated without his input. The British issued a warrant for his arrest, which spurred him to begin a guerrilla war that would last 10 months. When he was finally captured, he was exiled to Ghana for seven years. He is seen as a good ruler who was loved by his people and as a hero for resisting the British.
