The leader of the United Democratic Front (UDF), Muluzi ran for president in Malawi's first multiparty elections in 1994, defeating longtime leader Hastings Kamuzu Banda. Muluzi was reelected in 1999. Muluzi's administration was plagued by accusations of corruption, and he was blamed for the decision to sell the nation's crop reserves prior to a harsh drought and famine. Attempts to alter the constitution's two-term limit were unsuccessful, and Muluzi stepped down in 2004.
