Though born in France, Carlos Gardel was raised in Buenos Aires. In Argentina, he became famous as a tango singer and film star. He is celebrated worldwide as one who popularized the tango. The unique quality of his voice and his premature death in an airplane accident helped secure his legacy within Latin America's popular folklore.
