César Vallejo was born the youngest of 11 children. Although his father wanted him to become a priest, he felt passionately about poetry. He also became a political activist, espousing communism in hopes of bringing social justice to the poor in his country. Vallejo traveled extensively and spent much of his later life in Europe.
