Period: 1930–

One of Nigeria’s best known writers, Achebe began his career in broadcasting. He went on to serve in the government of the secessionist state of Biafra before writing his famous novel Things Fall Apart about the Ibo tribe. Always writing in English, his works have been translated into more than 40 languages. He has also written poetry, short stories, and children’s books.
