Kissaka is the oldest of ten children and the child of coffee and banana growers. She has studied art, audio-visual media, and writing in Zambia, Dallas, and Florida. She became a Catholic nun at age 21 and currently lives in Tanzania as part of the Community of Sisters of Our Lady of Usambara. In her art, Kissaka incorporates local materials along with audio-visual elements to portray her culture to others, especially focusing on the status of women.
