Calendar learned to be a carpenter before entering the music business. Before long he had gained a reputation for his popular maringa style of music, a unique sound that originated with freed Caribbean slaves. He is also known for his unique rhythms and lyrics. As he grew older, his songs became more philosophical. He also became involved in other pursuits, such as radio broadcasting and organizing a national dance troupe.
