Mondlane was raised in Mozambique and began his studies in South Africa. But when apartheid forced him out of school, he went to the United States to finish college. He went on to work at the United Nations before returning home and forming a coalition of several revolutionary groups. Before he could see his goal of an independent Mozambique fulfilled, he was killed by a Portuguese bomb.
