Period: 1920–
Born in Georgetown and educated in the United States and at England's Cambridge University, Braithwaite has written several books, including the popular 1959 novel To Sir, with Love (later made into a film), which reflects his experiences teaching in a working-class area of London. In addition to his literary career, Braithwaite has held numerous teaching positions in the United States and served as Guyana's representative to the United Nations and as an ambassador.
