Kuti used his music to spread a message of activism. As a singer, musician, and composer, he used his unique “Afro-beat” sound to protest corruption in government and military, as well as colonialism. Even as his music that promoted African identity became popular in Europe, he was targeted and eventually imprisoned by the Nigerian government.
