Period: 1953–
After competing in the 1972 Olympic Games at Montreal, Bayi went on to break the 1500-meter world record in the Commonwealth Games of 1974, beating the two New Zealand favorites. He also broke the world record for the mile in Kingston, Jamaica when he ran it in 3 minutes, 51 seconds. Despite his successes, Bayi and the other Tanzanian runners who arose during this time period were not well supported by government or private institutions. Since retiring from running, Bayi has created his own sports foundation.
