As a teenager, Mbango Etone began her athletics career by competing in the 400-meter sprint, then switched to the triple jump event. She trained in Senegal and went on to success in international competition, including second-place finishes at the 2002 Commonwealth Games and the 2001 and 2003 World Championships. Mbango Etone became the first Cameroonian woman to win an Olympic medal when she won the triple jump at the 2004 Games.
