Fredericks was raised in an all-black township outside Windhoek. His athletic skill became obvious very quickly. At age 20, Brigham Young University offered him a scholarship, and he competed there while getting his education. After Namibia gained its independence, he competed internationally for his country, winning four Olympic silver medals and two world titles in the 100- and 200-meter distances.
