Born in the village of Vicuña in northern Chile, Mistral was a schoolteacher who began to write poetry after the suicide of her lover. Her emotional love poems made her world famous, and she was awarded the 1945 Nobel Prize for literature, becoming the first woman and the first Latin American to win the award.
