From 1861 until his assassination in 1875, Moreno was the initiator of church-centered rule in Ecuador. He is remembered primarily for his belief that the application of moral principles by a strong leader was the remedy for his nation's political and economic predicament. As a ruler, he introduced many reforms and fostered greater financial stability for his nation.
