At age 13, Novaes was awarded a government grant to study music in Europe. After studying at the Paris Conservatory, she went on to perform in every major hall throughout Europe and the United States in a career that spanned almost 50 years. Although she made numerous recordings throughout her career, critics believe few adequately represent her skill. The Brazilian government awarded Novaes the Order of Merit for her contributions to music. In 1989, the government created the Novaes Memorial Piano Competition to further honor her.
