Jaime Escalante taught math and science in Bolivia for many years before leaving for the United States. He quickly became one of the country's most influential teachers when his inner-city students achieved surprisingly high scores on the standardized calculus test. Escalante has received broad recognition and national honors for his teaching. The popular 1988 film Stand and Deliver dramatized his experiences.
