Dr. Sophie Redmond was the first Creole female physician in Suriname. She was also an active politician, playwright, actress, and feminist, working to improve the position of women and disadvantaged groups. Through radio shows and theater plays in the Sranan Tongo language, she made medical information more accessible to the average person. One of Paramaribo’s main roads and a school are named after Dr. Redmond.
