Considered a national hero, José Francisco de San Martín helped lead Argentina, Chile, and Peru in the revolution against Spanish rule. Of Spanish descent, he left with his family to Spain when six years old but later returned to Argentina, where he sided with revolutionaries against the Spanish. He contributed military skill and determination to the cause for independence.
