Chilavert was known for his talents even as a young teen, and he started playing professionally at age 15. His career has taken him from teams in Paraguay to Spain, Argentina, and France. He was voted World Goalkeeper of the Year in 1995 and 1997. He is best known in his own country for helping Paraguay qualify for the 1998 World Cup competition.
