Juan Diego was one of the few indigenous men who had converted to Christianity in the early colonial days. He made an indelible impact on Mexican culture when he said the Virgin Mary had appeared to him and that she looked Indian. His experience helped persuade a generation of indigenous people who had previously shunned Christianity to accept Catholicism.
