Passion or Profession: Founder of modern Korean linguistics
Period: 1876–1914
Ju Si-Gyeong and his students were fundamental in the standardization of modern Korean based on spelling and grammar. He established a society for the study of the Korean language and helped divide the language into parts of speech. He also promoted the idea of writing modern Korean characters (Hanguel) horizontally, which has become the preferred method.
