Akmatov joins Chingiz Aytmatov as one of the most acclaimed Kyrgyz writers. During the nation's political reform movement in the late 1980s, Akmatov condemned Soviet rule and sought to promote democratic institutions. His novels include Years Around the Sun, published in 1992.
