Al-Jahmi’s father was committed to her education before schooling for females was mandatory. She studied under private tutors, and eventually became accomplished in the fields of poetry, education, and broadcasting. In the mid 1950s, she joined the Libyan Broadcasting company and became the first female anchor in news radio—a male-dominated field. She went on to found magazines for women and children. She also created an arts program and summer camp for children. She is recognized for her contribution to Libyan culture.
