Passion or Profession: king of Lozi peoples
Period: c. 1845–1916
When he was born, Lewanika Lubosi was simply called Lubosi. It was only years later after he had brought many Lozi tribes together that he took the title Lewanika, which means “uniter.” Lubosi was able to unite the tribes into the region’s strongest kingdom; together they warded off challenges from rival tribal groups. However, Lubosi was unable to overcome the European settlers, and by the time he died he had become little more than a figurehead.
