Taya trained in French military schools before becoming a powerful military leader in Mauritania. After holding several positions in the military, he became the national leader after a coup in 1984. He initially made some popular moves, but soon began supporting the killing or deporting of Black Africans. Although he has made some reforms, including holding controversial elections, he remains a dictatorial leader.
