Abshir Musse is a former military general who was the police chief in Somalia at the time of its independence in 1960. He had a reputation for fairness and incorruptibility; accordingly, when questionable elections took place in 1969, he was the top-ranking official to stand up against them. He was imprisoned for 12 years by the government. Upon his release, he helped American humanitarian projects in Somalia until moving to the United States.
