Sadat was an Egyptian army officer and politician who served as president of Egypt from 1970 until his assassination in 1981. He actively sought to resolve Egypt's conflict with Israel and instigated peace talks which led to a 1979 peace agreement. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1978.
