Muhammad ibn Musa abu Djafar al-Khorezmi |
Passion or Profession: Mathematician
Period: Ninth century
As a medieval mathematician, al-Khorazmiy had great influence over mathematical theories. Although his name is not as recognized as some Greek mathematicians, he helped develop Arabic numerals, the use of zero as a placeholder, and algebraic theory. In fact, algebra was named after a portion of the title of one of his books, Al gabr w'al muqubalah. Several of his books were translated into other languages and have influenced mathematical thought until the present day.
