Obasanjo rose to power as a military leader, but became president the first time in 1976 after another president was assassinated. He turned the government over to civilians and retired but was elected again in 1999. He has been praised for cracking down on corruption while improving infrastructure. However, his critics point out that he has been unable to fix the economy or stop ethnic violence.
