Born Jules Shungu Wembadio Pene Kikumba in Kasai, Papa Wemba first achieved popularity as a singer and cofounder of the soukous band Zaiko Langa Langa in Kinshasa in 1970. In 1976, he formed the band Viva La Musica, with which he continues to perform. He relocated to Paris in the 1980s. Known as “the King of Rhumba,” Papa Wemba is also known for his flamboyant and influential fashion styles. He remains one of the most recognizable figures in African music.
