For some time before Namibia's independence, Gawanas lived in exile in the United Kingdom, fighting apartheid. Since then, this lawyer and gender law professor has risen to high ranks in the new Namibian government. Since 1996, she has been acting as her country's ombudswoman, in which role she represents the public by investigating and addressing complaints reported by citizens.
