Seewoosagur Ramgoolam was born in Mauritius but educated in London. While there, he associated with other great minds of Indian background, including Mahatma Ghandi. It was also in London that he learned to appreciate the socialist programs that he would later help institute at home. Upon returning to Mauritius, he helped lead the island to independence and became its first prime minister.
