Steve Biko was an antiapartheid leader who helped found the all-black South African Students’ Organization. The Black Consciousness Movement developed out of this organization and sought to fight the apartheid’s political and psychological effects. In 1977, Biko was arrested for his activities. His death, less than a month later, stimulated an international outcry against the South African government.
