Before Morocco gained independence, Sultan Muhammad V was the nation's most influential leader. His opposition to the French led many Moroccans to follow suit. After fighting for this cause for several years, Morocco was granted independence in 1956. Muhammad V became king in 1956 and reigned until his death in 1961.
