Mamadou has been deeply involved in Nigerien politics for years. He was part of the coup that overthrew the country’s first president in 1974. After holding other government jobs, he was elected president in 1999. Mamadou has worked to develop the economy and negotiate foreign aid, but has also been accused of authoritarian practices.
