Salih spent years studying in England and then working for the British Broadcasting Service. The extended time he spent in Western society gave him a unique perspective on his homeland of Sudan and its culture. Many of his works—including his most famous novel, Season of Migration to the North—deal with ideas about culture. His style has been compared to the magical realism often used in Latin American literature.
