Théophile Obenga was born in Congo-Brazzaville and educated in France. He is a distinguished scholar of Egyptian history. Together with his mentor Cheikh Anta Diop, he promoted the view that African researchers should write about African history and culture. He served as his country's foreign affairs minister in the 1970s. Obenga also headed the International Center for Bantu Studies in Libreville, Gabon, and has taught at San Francisco State University.
