Born in Khojane, Mofolo worked in a variety of professions, including teaching, interpreting, and proofreading. He wrote three novels: The Traveller of the East (Moeti oa Bochabela, 1907), Pitseng (1910), and Chaka (1925). Chaka, a historial novel about King Shaka of the Zulu Empire, is considered one of the most important pieces of 20th-century African literature.
