Usuman dan Fodio was a Muslim missionary who went on to lead a jihad or holy war against rival kingdoms in what is Nigeria. He established a Muslim kingdom based at Sokoto, which was expanded by his brother and son. The kingdom he helped establish remained in power until the British gained control over the area.
